Barry Greene (1895-1966), "Pepe" oil on canvas, 30 x 17 in., frame: 35 x 22 in.
Provenance: Private Collection, Houston; A.C. Cook Collection, Fort Worth. Cook was a prominent businessman in the Ft. Worth Stockyards, and owner of the legendary "Hock Shop" Texas art collection of over 400 paintings, selections from which traveled to prominent museums around the state.
J. Barry Greene, internationally known artist, born in New York City, was trained at the National Academy of Design and the Art Student's League of New York and at the leading academies of Paris. Among his teachers were: F. Luis Mora, Louis Biloul, Pierre Bonnard, and Desire Lucas. He has had many one-man shows in New York, Boston and Los Angeles, and is a member of numerous Art Associations throughout the country and abroad. Among his important awards are the Pulitzer Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, Medal of Honor of the Allied Artists of America, Prize at Laguna Beach Festival of Arts (1952), First Prize Statewide Exhibition at Santa Cruz (1958), and many other top awards. He has exhibited in juried museum exhibitions nationally and internationally. His biography is recorded in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the West.
