Peter L. Hohnstedt (1871-1957), "Near Comfort, Texas", oil on canvas, 28 x 36 in., frame: 36.5 x 44 in.
Provenance: private collection, Houston, Texas
Hohnstedt was born in Cincinnati, where he received his early art training from Frank Duveneck. About 1914, Hohnstedt moved to New Orleans, where he was asked to do a painting for the Delgado Museum. A wealthy man provided him with a room on his yacht so he could find greater opportunity to visit and study the swamp areas of Louisiana. Hohnstedt and artist Clarence Millet painted together in Louisiana and Mississippi. In the mid-1920s, Hohnstedt moved to Comfort, Texas in 1928 and had a studio in San Antonio He exhibited at the Witte Museum in 1929 and there won two awards.
