Amanda Sewell (New York, 1859 - 1926) portrait of a young girl seated holding a nest of birds. Signed lower left. Oil on canvas. Sight size: 29 x 24 inches. Lydia Amanda Brewster Sewell studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and William Sartain at the Art Students League. She also studied in Paris, France with William Bouguereau, Charles Emile Carolus-Duran and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. Sewell's career was based in New York City, where she was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1903. Born in Essex County, New York in North Elba in 1859, Sewell exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1888 and 1903; and many of the expositions of the day, including the Columbian, Chicago, Illinois, in 1893, where she won a medal; Pan-American, Buffalo, New York, 1901; Charleston, in South Carolina, 1902; and the St. Louis, in Missouri, 1904.
