Description
Monumental early 20th century Herschede nine tube, triple chime, tall case clock, purportedly a category winner in the 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair, the carved mahogany case, having an arched crest centering a scroll and cabochon crowned by opposing griffins, above a glazed door opening to a dial with a silvered chapter ring having applied brass Arabic numbers, pierced hands, a sub seconds dial, and chime/silent & Westminster/ 8 bells sub dials, with pierced brass filigree in the center as well as the corners, topped by a moon phase dial embellished with a painted sailing scene, inscribed 'Elite Grand Prize St. Louis,' the dial surmounting a case with a beveled glass door and side lights opening to the nine tubular bells, three brass weights on pulleys, and the brass pendulum, flanked by flutted tapering corner columns having acanthus carved capitals and bases, the whole ending in a carved plinth resting on paw feet, with cabinet key, 102"h x 30.5"w x 18"d.
