Item Details
Description
1st century AD. A Romano-Celtic, fossiliferous limestone head of a bearded male with bands of curly hair framed by a laurel wreath. See Henig, M. (ed), Roman Sculpture from the Cotswold Region, with Devon and Cornwall, Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani, Corpus of Sculpture of the Roman World, Great Britain, Vol. 1, Fascicule 7, Oxford, 1994. 8 kg, 20cm (8"). Private collection, Bath, Avon, UK. The head is possibly that of Jupiter in the guise of a Celtic god, such as Taranis, and was probably made by the Cotswold school of sculptors who were noted for their work in Roman Britain.
