Description
5th-2nd century BC. A gold pendant with repousse motif of the mask of the god Bes with feather headdress, ribbed suspension loop above. See Baron Empain collection, Christies 14 April 2011, lots 39-40 for similar examples. 0.22 grams, 13mm (1/2"). From an important Mayfair, London, collection; acquired in the 1990s. The dwarf-like figure of Bes was regarded as a protective deity who averted the evil eye and helped woman in childbirth, as well as protect children through to adulthood. His image is found on head rests, beds, mirrors and cosmetic pots as well as amulets of faience or gold. He is also depicted at temple sites associated with the divine birth of a god, such as at the Birth House at the temple of Denderah.
