James Sowerby (1757-1822) was a scientist, artist, and engraver. In his early career, he was a portrait painter and teacher whose students included author Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. Sowerby produced a large corpus of work that appeared in many different publications and journals. For English Botany, he drew and engraved more than 2, 500 illustrations over a twenty year period.
Copper Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto copper by cutting grooves into it. An impression is created on the copper plate, which is then filled with opaque ink. When paper is pressed into the plate, it creates raised and colored areas.
