Description

Carved wooden image of a Mother and her children from the Afo peoples of the Benue river, Northern Nigeria. Beautifully carved with stylized facial treatment, note the tall headdress o the mother and the children, shown with hands to their heads. Such sculptures are known as Okeshi figures and were used by the Alanya Beshi society during annual fertility rites. Measures 34.5 inches tall.

Condition

Overall well weathered, eroded bottom, but sculpture remains intact.
