Item Details
Description
Measures 64" overall; 49-7/8" octagonal steel barrel, swamped at muzzle. Bore is straight rifled for its full length, rectangular proof mark on right flat, near breech, is obscure, but was probably Amsterdam. Walnut half-stock is slightly ‘fish-bellied’ in classic Hudson Valley style, but with a relief cheek-piece on the left side of stock, carved with tear drop in relief around barrel tang, lockplate, and sideplate. Wooden ramrod. All hardware is brass and is of a classic Dutch style. Unusual but also typically Dutch is the rear sight: a large spread “butterfly” cast integral with the barrel band that supports it. This Spanish/Moorish trait was introduced into the Netherlands when they were ruled by Spain. Like the rifling, it facilities dual use as a fowler and rifle; broad enough for wing shooting, its central notch permits accuracy with a single ball. Brass side plate is of flat ‘triangular’ form. Original flintlock; lock replaced in period of use with circa 1790 English lock stamped "BLACKISTON/&/LOCKWOOD", consistent with early use in America. Fitted with iron sling swivels. This Dutch gun of American provenance is an interesting example. Very good; barrel and lock have been cleaned bright, some scattered light pitting and marks from use. Stock has been refinished, wood has been repaired above lock, small chip at both ends of lockplate, scattered marks from use. Brass furniture polished, some scattered dents and scratches, sideplate repaired and one lock screw is contemporary. Serial Number-NSN; Manufacturer-NA; Model-Flintlock Rifle; Caliber-NA; Barrel Length-49-7/8"; FFL Status-Antique;
