Description
Between the years 1867 and 1874 the Springfield Armory altered approximately 1,215 Spencer Infantry rifles and fitted them with the Stabler cut-off device, which would allow single shot only; and fitted them with a cleaning rod beneath the barrel. It is fitted with the military style folding rear sight and post front sight. Receiver bridge is stamped "Model 1865" with Spencer patent information. These rifled features full round barrel, two barrel bands, front barrel band sling swivel and rear stock sling swivel. Both barrel bands are stamped with a "U". Partially visible cartouche on left side of stock in oval. Has matching serial number stamped on rear of barrel. Saddle ring bar has been plugged. Original case colored, the frame has patinad out but still retains some pattern. Original tube feed and tube loading device. The barrel and bands are a smooth blue-brown patina. Barrel band retaining springs still exhibit most of their Nitre blue. The long musket length walnut forestock is excellent with minor dings, as is the buttstock. Frame and lever has numerous inspector stamps. Perfect action with strong rifled bore with some black powder abrasion. An extremely scarce, U.S. issue, Springfield altered Civil War Spencer rifle in far above average condition.
