The E Grade shotgun was referred to the $100 Grade in 1883-1886. As early as 1889, it was offered with the laminated steel barrels. In 1904, the E Grade $100 gun was available with Krupp steel barrels, which this has. There were three engraving patterns offered in this model, this one has the pointer on left side with setter on right side. This exact engraving can be seen on Page 61 of the book Uncle Dan Lefever by Elliot. Approx. 11,000 E Grades were manufactured in 12 gauge. This shotgun was manufactured at the tail end of 1903. Features; matted rib, single bead, 60% original blue, mixing with patina and edge freckling, mere bores, matching number forend, finely checkered dark walnut with the engraved furniture. Frame is a sidelock hammerless, top safety, double trigger with the beautiful engraving already described. Trigger guard engraved with a mallard. Frame retains traces of case colors in hidden area. Basically is a smooth clean gun metal patina. Has pistol grip walnut stock, black composite grip cap, and black composite monogram buttplate with silver owner ID oval. Walnut stock is beautiful oil finish, pistol grip is checkered. The unfortunate part is that the wrist is cracked through on both sides and has a shotty glue repair. This would be an excellent gun to get total restoration as the metal is sharp as clean. Lock up is tight as new with no wiggle. Extremely scarce, Uncle Dan special.
