Item Details
Description
According to recently discovered factory records a total of 2,456 of these were shipped beginning with serial number 334660 April 1941 to 339744 September 1942; this drilling falls into that range. This is a near mint example of the very scarce World War II German M30 Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle as manufactured by the J. P. Sauer and Sohns company. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater and was intended to provide a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. These are a three-barreled combination gun; 12 x 12 bore, over a rifled 9.3X74R barrel. These drilling exhibit the beautiful, high quality, pre-war workmanship that the J. P. Sauer and Sohns factory is noted for which consists of a high polish rust blued metal finish on the barrel with a beautiful color case hardened finish on the scalloped boxlock receiver, trigger guard, grip cap and forend latching mechanism that is combined with a hand checkered European walnut pistol grip straight comb stock with small left side roll over cheek piece and forearm that have a hand rubbed oil finish. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark and the underside of each barrel has the Commercial "Eagle/N" proofmarks, along with the bore and gauge/caliber markings, "12/65" and is dated 7-42 for the month and year of manufacture. Rifle barrel is marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number 338829 is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the very end of the trigger guard tang; the last four digits are also stamped on the inside metal of the forend. The right rear breech of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" Luftwaffe mark carrying the Nazi Swastika. The barrel has a matted rib with white metal front rifle sight and a 100 yard flip-up rear rifle sight. This drilling has a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever and a tang mounted barrel selector with double set triggers. Intertwined "SS" proof for the Sauer & Sohns factory along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof on the right side of receiver rail. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a black composite serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Sohns factory in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe Eagle with swastika insignia. This rifle has fine scroll engraving on the frame, trigger guard, ears, barrel release, forend metal and all screws. The external rear breech of barrels, exposed when assembled reads "KRUPP - LAUFSTAHL" and has the J.P. Sauer & Sogn, Suhl marking on both sides with some fine border engraving at barrel breech. The drilling is packed in its green re-painted aluminum case stenciled on lid with model. A very small "Eagle/2 Luftwaffe stick Eagle" proof on the very front directly above the original leather carry handle. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling and has a horse hair and wood dividers. A black cardboard box contains the three piece wood cleaning rod with five brushes/mops and a glass jar of Wegner's mapox. The rifle also includes an original leather sling and two vintage ten round boxes of Norma ammunition, and a contemporary RWS ammunition for the rifle, along with three ten round boxes of Rottweil 12 gauge No. 7 shot for 2-1/2" and 2-3/4" chamber. As to condition; if a finer example exists we have neither seen nor heard of it. The Drilling shows virtually no external wear of any kind. Barrels retains virtually all of the original factory blue with minor interior takedown wear only. The case colors on frame, trigger guard and grip cap remain at 95% or better, most still brilliant. All screw heads are perfect. Wood is near mint with a couple of extremely minor impressions. Checkering is razor sharp. Arguably one of the finest Luftwaffe Drillings extant. Missing only the manual. These storied World War II Luftwaffe Drillings amongst the most sought after of all German World War II military issue weapons due to their scarcity, history and their exemplary commercial finish and quality. Serial Number-338829; Manufacturer-Sauer & Sohn; Model-Drilling; Caliber-12, 12, 9.3x74mmR; Barrel Length-25 - 5/8"; FFL Status-Curio & Relic;
