Description
This remarkable survivor of one of the roughest winters of the Revolutionary War is inscribed by the owner on the lid "WILLIAM LOYD 11TH VIRGINIA/VALLEY FORGE 1777". Wood construction with square nails, one side carved with two snakes, the other with two sets of two crossed tomahawks. The lid has a carved skull. These carvings have traces of white paint on them. Good condition, as found patina, showing heavy use, some losses and chips, especially on slide top lid runners. Document with information from the Valley Forge Muster Rolls is included. It states that William Loyd was a private from Virginia, he was part of the 3rd Division, Woodford's Brigade, 11th Virginia Regiment, in Captain Gabriel Long's Company. He was on the roll from December, 1777 Through June, 1778.
