Description
FRANCE, 1828-1893A Neoclassical bronze figure of the Greek Goddess Thetis by French sculptor Pierre Eugene Emile Hebert. The work depicts the Sea Goddess in traditional himation resting on an anvil. Her foot rests on a Corinthian-type helmet as she preps for war securing her greave with shield to her side. The work is signed "Emile Hebert" and titled "Thetis" on the base. The sculpture stands on a large French Neoclassical black slate mantle clock. The clock accentuates Thetis with its patinated bronze classical ornamentation. The face of the clock is adorned with a frame-form bronze element surrounding the gilt Roman Numeral dial with figural gargoyle profile pillars and center floral crest. The face is book ended by indented sides with gilt incised floral panels and bronze banding. The corners are capped with Composite Order columns supported by a figural head of Bacchus. The swell curved foot of the slate base rests on a gilt bronze gallery supported by four curved feet with raised foliate elements. The clock is powered by a Samuel Marti movement with C. 1860 Medaille de Bronze mark. The movement bears a retailers stamp of "G.S" over a bee.
