Item Details
Description
Charles Alexandre Picart le Doux (French 1881-1959) Oil on Canvas "Bouquet de Fleurs" Lily Still Life Bouquet. Signed by the artist lower right and dated 34 In the original period heaviiy carved French wood frame. In Frames measures 28.25x36.50x2.50". PROVENANCE: From the Private Paris, France and Charleston SC Collection of J. Marterer, author of Paris 201, the Winner of the Benjamin Franklin Awards - GOLD MEDAL (Travel) and Independent Publisher Awards - SILVER MEDAL (Travel). Weight is 15 pds. Picart le Doux was born in Paris and studied there, first in 1900 at the Academie Julian in the atelier of Marcel-Andre Baschet, and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Gerome. A friendship with Renoir led him away from academic art, and Impressionism strongly influenced the landscapes he began to show at the Salon des Independants from 1904. He also exhibited at the Salon de la Societe National des Beaux-Arts, Salon d'Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries. In 1920 Ezra Pound noted that he was working in a new style, different from "the placid blue and white Dianas and Pans which used to hang in the 'Independants'." In 1937 he was awarded the Grande Medaille at the Exposition Internationale in Paris and he was made an Officer of the Legion d'Honneur in 1950. Picart le Doux took up tapestry around 1943 and is now also well known for his work in this medium. His work is in numerous Museums in Paris, Moscow, London, Algiers, Nice, Cannes and Versailles.
