An adorable Art Deco brooch of a winged insect, set with diamonds, rubies and a solitaire pearl, in platinum, France, circa 1920's - 1940's. This delightful piece has been expertly crafted out of platinum in the form of a winged insect whose identity is most definitely up for debate. Is it a butterfly? A cicada? A bumble bee? Or some other winged bug or beetle! Whatever it is the detail and design are superb with fine milgrain work throughout and a sturdy trombone clasp to finish it off. Prong set across the front are 15 round cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.20 carats. All the gems have very good color (F - H) and clarity (VS - SI). Two rubies are bezel set to form the eyes. Both gems have slightly purple red hue, strong saturation, medium tone and very good clarity (eye clean / VS). A single, saltwater, cultured pearl of approximately 7.2 mm has been set to the rear. The pearl is white with slightly yellow hue, has lovely luster and is free of blemishes. The brooch is in overall very good vintage condition showing only general signs of wear. It weighs approximately 7.53 grams and measures 1.37 inches (3.5 cm) wide by 1.26 inches (3.2 cm) tall. It is unmarked but acid tested positive for platinum. Charming!
