Item Details

Description

Large checkered flag, waved at the finish line of races. Black and white pattern on cotton fabric. Suspended on painted wood pole. Checkered flags originated as a universal symbol of the finish line at horse races and equestrian events, and were later put to use in motorcar and cycle races. Black and white was chosen as an easily seen and recognizable color scheme, due to the high amounts of dirt and dust at these races. American, early 20th century.
