Finely colored botanical drawing by one of the leading representatives of the Viennese Art Nouveau; Moser's watercolors achieve on the international auction market more than €26,000

Kolo Moser’s oeuvre includes numerous paintings, drawings and sketches of flowers and plants. As an artist of the Art Nouveau, he was fascinated by the floral form, which he initially used in a stylized form for his pattern designs. After leaving the Wiener Werkstätten in 1907, he devoted himself to nature studies. He presumably found his motifs in Semmering, where he spent the summers in his wife's family home. In the present work dated 1909 Moser has rendered the branch of a Chinese holly is an incredibly life-like manner, which showcases his skillful use of color and light. The work is an example of the artist’s painting inspired by nature before his turn to symbolism.

The drawing is signed, inscribed and dated lower left ‘K. Moser / Wien 11.28.1909’. The sheet is mounted under a mat at the top margin. There is a water stain tot the top margin and a tiny hole in the lower right corner. The sheet size is 25.9 x 18.1 cm.
