Thangka
A thangka is a scroll painting of Tantric Buddhism. It is used for meditation in temples or in home shrines and processions. Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, guardian deities, Arhats, various lamas, ascetics and Pandits in various incarnations are portrayed in scenes of their life. Often they depict mandalas with the wheel of life as well as lines of tradition. Thangkas are created according to well-defined iconographic rules (in terms of body shape, dress and attitude of the sitter), and are particularly common in Tibet.
Palden Lhamo
Palden Lhamo is a Tibetan goddess, protector of the teachings of Buddha. The first mention of her dates to the 11th century. As part of the Buddhist-Tibetan pantheon, she is venerated in the Bön. As protector of the Dalai Lama, she has an important place in the Gelug school. Palden Lhamo is also the protector of the city of Lhasa and of the Tibetan government. Iconographically, Palden Lhamo is tied to the Taras and Sarasvati; her appearance in thangka paintings is usually fierce and awe-inspiring.
