Italian School
Dimensions: each 73 x 59 cm
Carved ornamental gold frame: 90 x 76 cm
Good Condition
Pair of paintings illustrating fantastical combinations of architectural elements including figure staffage
In the 16th century Georgio Vasari first mentioned the concept of Capriccio. It describes a fantasy piece or an ideal veduta in which fictional elements of architecture or landscapes are combined, putting the realistic representation aside. In this pair of paintings, the artist impressively presents magnificent, grotesque-looking columns that are completely opposite to the classical order, its shaft decorated with mascarons and atlantes, combined with an effective use of light and figure staffage.
Condition:
The paintings are in good age-appropriate condition. Bothe canvases are relined. The varnish is slightly darkened. Retouching visible under UV light. One painting shows a soft vertical abrasion along the column (approx. 30 cm), otherwise generally of good impression. The image dimensions are 73 x 59 cm, the frame dimensions 90 x 76 cm. The frames show slight signs of use.
