Tiffany & Co. (est. in 1837)
Tiffany & Co. was founded in 1837, when Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young established a small dry-goods and stationery store in New York. In 1845, Tiffany published the first mail order catalog in the US. In 1847, the company started to sell silverware, which was manufactured mostly in Europe. Unlike many other silver manufacturers of the time, Tiffany & Co. did not produce silver plated mass ware, but quality sterling silver products. Tiffany soon expanded the company through the production of fine jewelry pieces. Charles Lewis Tiffany secured his reputation as the ‘King of Diamonds’ with the acquisition of the largest yellow diamonds in 1878, and with the introduction of the classic Tiffany engagement ring - a solitaire ring with six prongs - in 1886. Since 1879, the name Tiffany was also associated with unusual glass objects through the foundation of the ‘Tiffany Glass and Decoration Company’ by Louis Comfort. In 1902, Louis Comfort took over the business Tiffany & Co. of his father Charles Lewis. Due to the location of the main shop on Fifth Avenue, which opened in 1910, Tiffany was soon widely known and even became the Austro-Hungarian Purveyors to the court in Vienna. Customers included wealthy citizens and monarchs. Even today, Tiffany & Co. is one of the premier American luxury companies, selling luxury jewelry and high-quality household goods. (cbo)
