Joh. Loetz Witwe (est. 1836)
The products of the Bohemian glass manufactory Loetz Witwe constitute a highlight of Art Nouveau. In 1840, Johann Loetz bought the glassworks in Klostermühle, which were originally founded in 1836. After his death, the company was directed by his widow who eventually passed it to her grandson Max Ritter von Spaun. Von Spaun modernized the company and helped it achieving world fame. The high-quality glass was sought after, especially because of its purity, intense colors and the metallic iridescent phenomenal decor. Loetz’ Witwe cooperated with important manufacturers such as J. & L. Lobmeyr, E. Bakalowits Söhne and Argentor-Werke and collaborated with renowned artists like Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, as well as the Wiener Werkstätte. (cko)
