Description
One of a pair, this exquisitely carved graceful standing female pixiu with curled horns, wings, and bird tail is most likely from the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 ce) or early Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912 ce). The anthropomorphic figure is heavily pregnant, a totem for fertility and fecundity. The sculpture is 6-5/8 inches tall, 2-3/4 inches wide, and 3-3/4 inches deep.
Condition
The jade exhibits very light surface alteration and a waxy luster from professional restoration. From a private collection, this artifact is clean and sound, without any notable defect, and will be sold without further restoration (as is).
