Description
This exquisitely carved archaic jade bi possibly dates as early as the Hongshan Culture (4700 to 2900 bce), but is most likely from an early dynastic period. The small heavy disk features carving on one side, a stylized bird. The disk is approximately 6-3/4 inches in diameter with 1-5/8 inch inner diameter, and is 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick (25.4 mm/in) with low carved relief on one side. Although we do not know the exact meaning of bird motifs, the context of similar finds suggests that these anthropomorphic creatures were part of the religious or shamanic system. Note: A bi is a flat jade disc with a circular hole in the center. Neolithic bi are generally undecorated, while those of later periods of China, like the Zhou Dynasty, bear increasingly ornate surface carving whose motifs represented deities associated with the sky (four directions) as well as standing for qualities and powers the wearer wanted to invoke or embody. As laboriously crafted objects, they testify to the concentration of power and resources in the hands of a small elite.
