Description
This exquisitely carved old jade bi is possibly from the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912 ce), or later. The small heavy pendant features carving on both sides, with a beautifully detailed Phoenix. The pendant is approximately 2-1/4 inches in diameter and is 1/2 inch thick including deep carving. Pei like these bear increasingly ornate surface carving whose motifs represented deities associated with the sky (four directions) as well as standing for qualities and powers the wearer wanted to invoke or embody. As laboriously crafted objects, they testify to the concentration of power and resources in the hands of a small elite.
Condition
The nephrite appears to have been dyed to enhance the natural beauty of the jade, and exhibits light surface alteration and patina from age. From a private collection, this bi is clean, however will be sold without further restoration (as is).
