Even before the First World War, César Klein was regarded as one of the avant-garde artists in Germany. Influenced by Cézanne and the Cubist style of painting, Klein's work experienced a stylistic turn from Impressionism to more expressive compositions beginning in the 1910s.

Condition:
The painting is in very good condition, according to age. The canvas has been laid down on cardboard and shows minor signs of foxing. It has been cut irregularly at the lower margin and is warped slightly lower left. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame is minimally chipped.

César Klein (1876-1954)
After a training in painting, César Klein attended the arts college in Hamburg in 1894 and later the Düsseldorf Academy as well as the school of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin. In the capital, he could subsist on his designs for book illustrations, stained glass windows and wall paintings; in 1910 he was a co-founder of the New Secession. In the beginning influenced by Impressionism, he adopted a more expressionist style starting in 1913 and soon became one of the most famous German expressionists. The artist was one of the founding members of the ‘Novembergruppe’ and held a teaching position at the Museum of Applied Arts for some years. In the 1920s Klein created stage sets for various German and Austrian films and several Berlin theaters as well as participated in numerous exhibitions. During the Nazi regime, Klein was imposed with an exhibition prohibition and his works were regarded as ‘degenerate art’. He was one of the first German artists whose works were exhibited in London after the war. (cko)
