BEAUTIFUL CHINESE SILK PAINTING OF YOUNG HORSES IN SPRING BY BEIJING PALACE MASTER PAINTER ZHENG JUN 鄭筠/ZHENG ZHUYOU 鄭竹友

A Chinese scroll painting on high quality silk, depicting two handsome, young horses, happily grazing near a fresh water stream, spring peach blossoms overhead and a graceful and romantic willow tree close by. Absolutely beautiful and elegant! Colors on silk canvas and placed in silk brocade mounting. Would make a wonderful gift for the passionate equestrian or included in the connoisseur's Chinese paintings collection. Signatures and 1 seal.

Date: 1963, People's Republic of China (1949–present)
D: The painting image is approximately 40in (101cm) x 11.25in (28.58cm). The actual scroll is bigger.

Inscription:

On a ninth lunar month day in the autumn of a Guimao year (1963), painted in Zhuozhengyuan (Humble Administor’s Garden)

Author: Zheng Jun 鄭筠/Zheng Zhuyou 鄭竹友 (?-1976?)

BIOGRAPHY
As a descendant of the Qing painter Zheng Ji 鄭箕(1809-1879), Zheng Jun was a famous painting replication and repairing specialist. His replications impressed many famous painters including ZHANG DAQIAN in the Republican era. He was hired by the Palace Museum in Beijing to repair some of their collections. However, paintings signed with his own name are very rare.

This horse painting is after the style of typical horse paintings of the Qing palace, featuring two horses browsing on a meadow under a willow tree and a blooming peach tree. Even the title of the painting and his signature were made in the style of inscriptions from paintings in Beijing Palace Collection.

OTHER NOTES
"Zhang Daqian and Zheng Zhuyou's story: When Zhang Daqian imitation Shi Tao paintings were presented, even the expert Chen Biding and others were fooled. Zhang Daqian invited Zheng Zhuyou to his house, to look at a lot of Shi Tao paintings and asked which ones he thought were his imitation. Zheng Zhuyou quietly, one by one, examined the paintings. He was soon to distinguish between the authentic and the imitation. Zhang Daqian was stunned and filled with admiration of Zheng." -Loosely translated from the Shuhua Shoucang Paintings Association
