Terracotta sculpture. Displays a young, sleeping Bacchus. Grapevine crown, with tipped wine chalice in one hand, with head resting on spilling urn. Rectangular base. Signed CLODION on back side near legs. Done by prominent French sculptor Claude Michel (December 20, 1738 – March 29, 1814), better known as Clodion. He is celebrated for his work with the terracotta medium, as this piece also confirms. Born in Nancy, his work has been exhibited all over the world and is currently retained in the most prominent galleries and collections throughout Western Europe, Britain and the Americas.
