Item Details
Description
Russia, 18th century CE. A small traveling icon molded of brass that folds from a simple cabinet style outward to form a triptych. This shows Jesus, seated on a throne, in the upper center, while his apostles and others flank him. Size: 4.45" W x 3.25" H (11.3 cm x 8.3 cm)

In order to support traveling priests on missions, bronze and brass religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. These crosses were widespread in Russia by the 17th century, and are often mentioned in the 19th century writings of Pushkin and Chekhov.

Provenance: Ex-Private Orange County, CA collection acquired before 1980
