Description:
Copper--engraved map on two sheets. Overall 74.3x48.3 cm (29¼x19") plus margins.
Braun & Hogenberg's re-issue of Adrichem's plan of Jerusalem, oriented to the north rather than the east of the original. Kenneth Nebenzahl remarks that "Until the discoveries of nineteenth-century archeologists, this was the definitive layout of one of the world's most historic cities... The most dramatic and important [plan of Jerusalem] of the sixteenth century." The plan depicts not only the known structures of the ancient city but also illustrates numerous Biblical scenes in the locations where they were believed to have occurred. Adrichom drew upon the Bible and religious texts as well as on first-hand accounts of pilgrims for this retrospective depiction of the city as it was during the time of Christ.
