(4to) 31.5x24.5 cm (12½x9¾"), modern full black calf, bordered in gilt, spine gilt, blue morocco labels. First Edition.



Includes the scarce original subscription slip, tipped onto the front fly leaf, printed in blue and subscribed for "John Roe of Launceston" and "received for Captain John Ross" in contemporary manuscript. The Subscribers Slip also notes that this "Royal" edition and has more hand colored plates than the regular edition. Illustrated with 31 plates, including 6 maps and charts, some outlined in color (2 folding), 24 views, several of which are hand colored, and an additional engraved plate of Victoria Harbour from a drawing by Captain Ross. "Narrative and scientific results of expedition to Boothia Peninsula in the Victory, and return by sledge, boat, and the Isabella. Expedition was financed by Felix Booth and led by Sir John Ross, with his nephew, James C. Ross, second in command and head naturalist" - Arctic Bib. The expedition survived for four winters in the Arctic, during which James Clark Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole. Field lauds the "sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture, has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs... Everywhere through the narrative is interwoven the records of aboriginal life as it appeared to the explorers...."
