Inscribed by Bly on the verso of the title page: "To Mr. William Allen, Steamship Oceanic, with the compliments of Nellie Bly. New York, Aug. 18, 1890." A very rare book, an account of a journey around the globe by one of America's first women investigative journalists, Nellie Bly. Bly set off, funded by her employer, newspaper "The World," in an effort to beat the fictional record of around the world travel described in Jules Verne's popular novel "Around the World in Eighty Days." Her account, as well as that fellow journalist Elizabeth Bisland's simultaneous journey around the world in the opposite direction were published again in 2015 as the annual volume of the Lakeside Classics series. OCLC locates only five copies of this 1890 edition.
