Scarce report of this proposed railroad line serving San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. Noted collector and scholar Warren Heckrotte, describing this copy which was formerly in his collection, comments: "The text describes the route of the proposed railroad along the coast from SF to Santa Cruz, but says nothing about the construction or the cost. The many attractions, businesses along the route that will generate train traffic is the focus. It's a real money maker!" The map, which shows the proposed line in red, is "Map of the San Francisco and Ocean Shore Rail Road" (16.5x26.5 cm). There was a second map, not present here but provided in photocopy, "Map of the California Central Railway and Connections 1881," which shows the western U.S. east of California, "The Railway takes off from Santa Cruz straight across country to southern Utah, where it meets a number of hypothetical other rail lines." OCLC/WorldCat locates only one copy, at UCLA. Rocq 11789; Fickewirth, California Railroads, pp. 128, 155 ( a "paper railroad".)
