A FINELY CARVED ANTIQUE PAIR GILT-LACQUER FUZHOU VASES
A very fine pair of near-mirror-image Chinese antique Fuzhou vases, hand carved from wood into baluster shapes and beautifully dressed in rich black lacquer, then carved and gilt-decorated with autumn chrysanthemums and butterflies on a trellis background.
Fuzhou bodiless lacquerware was created by Shen Shao'an during the Qing Dynasty. A bowl, crafted by Shen was presented to the Emperor Qianlong. Qianlong was so delighted by the gift that he wrote a poem inside the bowl.
The craft of Fuzhou bodiless lacquerware is considered by the Chinese government to be on the verge of extinction. In 2006 it was classified as a State Intangible Cultural Heritage craft. It is one of only three artistic crafts treasures classified as "the three Chinese traditional craftworks", the other two being Beijing cloisonné and Jingdezhen ceramics.
Fuzhou bodiless lacqueware was exhibited in Paris in 1898 where it won a Gold Medal as a valued International Commodity. In the following years, the Shen family descendants won many awards from international exhibitions. It was favored by the Empress Dowager Cixi and became a favorite gift among royalty, government officials and foreign guests. It is now found in many museums around the world.
