Description
Scrimshaw sperm whale tooth incised with sailors around an anchor with a mermaid drinking and eagle holds a banner that says "Free Trade" and "Sailors Rights" and gripping an plaque with a bottle marked "GROG". The reverse is marked "JACK CONTENDING for the motto". A version, apparently by the same hand is featured in "Ingenious Contrivances, Curiously Carved: Scrimshaw in the New Bedford Whaling Museum" (page 82) as well as described in "Free Trade and Sailors' Rights in the War of 1812" (page 325). Scrimshawed tooth measures 4", 39" total length. Likely dates within a few years of 1812. Very good condition with some cuts and pitting on the side, a small loss on the bottom edge, and some splitting all around. Excellent example of politically motivated mariner scrimshaw.
