Copper goldplate, 62.7mm. By John Gadsby Chapman. Obv Small bust l. from the die of the middle-sized Polk Indian Peace Medal. Rev Oak wreath, Inauguration date APRIL IV/, MDCCCXLI. A very few were struck for President Polk’s visit to the Philadelphia Mint. This medal became a target in Refiner Richard McCulloh’s attacks on Chief Coiner Franklin Peale’s profit-making medal department. Sharp high relief, uneven patina, two small obverse field cuts.
