The most important deposits of lapis lazuli (Arab-Latin ‘blue stone’) for 6000 years are located in the western Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan. Under meager conditions and in rough terrain lapis lazuli is mined out as irregular deposit in limestone. Since prehistoric times, lapis lazuli was used for jewelry making. In the Middle Ages it was also used as a colorant for ultramarine. In some pompous buildings and churches there are inlays, wall panels and pillar overlays made of lapis lazuli.
Condition:
The lapis lazuli is in excellent condition and of finest quality. Occasionally smallest chips and minimal abrasion along the edges. (nlu)
