Description
Alexander John Drysdale (American/Louisiana, 1870-1934), "Posthumous Portrait of James Alexander Maxwell (1849-1903)", 1904, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, titled, signed and dated and localized "New Orleans" on stretcher, 24" x 20-1/4". Framed. Provenance: Private collection, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The painting offered here is a rare example of Alexander John DrysdaleΓÇÖs portraiture. After Drysdale quit the banking industry in 1901 to pursue a career in painting, he traveled to New York City where he came under the influence of George Inness, Robert Henri, William Merritt Chase, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Claude Monet. Though Drysdale's predilection was for landscape, he returned to New Orleans in 1903 registering himself as a portrait painter at 325 Camp Street. James Alexander Maxwell, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, worked in the shipping business for years in both Kentucky and New Orleans, before opening his own livery service (Maxwell Company Limited) at 225 and 231 Gravier Street, just blocks away from the young portrait artist. Whether the family commissioned this posthumous portrait just months after Maxwell's death or the portrait was gifted to the bereaved family by the artist is not known.
