Description
After John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851), "Brown-Headed Nuthatch", no. 25, pl. CXXV, from the Birds of America (1826-1838), hand-colored aquatint engraving by Robert Havell, verso watermarked "J Whatman/Turkey Mill/1831", plate 19-3/4" x 12-1/4", sheet 38-1/4" x 25-3/4". Glazed, matted and framed.
Condition
The print is lacking its upper and lower right corners, and there is a minor loss and tear to the lower left corner. There are scattered tears and repairs with notable toning to the top and right margins. Please see additional photographs. There is creasing to the left margin and light rippling to the lower left quadrant. Spots of foxing are scattered throughout, and a few of the spots appear to have been "touched up" with a cream-colored pigment. The plate is largely intact (minus a small dent) and retains excellent clarity of colors. The condition of the margins is consistent with age and medium.
