PAINTING WITH MEDALS BELONGING TO THE SUBJECT
Original ca. 1830s oil painting of a Royal Army of Prussia veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, a soldier who had fought both with and against forces under Napoleon during his military careers. The oil on board, 16" x 20 1/4" (sight), shows a bespectacled man in a black jacket regarding papers he holds before him. Pinned to his left chest are two medals: the "Veteranen Denkzeichen fur die Feldzuge 1790-1812" which was awarded to those Prussian who fought allied with and later against the French in the Russian Campaign and afterwards, along with the "Militar Denkzeichen fur 1813, 1814, 1815", awarded to those who who fought against the French, most notably at Waterloo. The painting, now framed in gilt wood, shows some professional restoration. It is accompanied by the soldier's two medals, those actually portrayed in the painting, obtained from the family when our consignor purchased the oil in Germany over twenty years ago. The medals now bear replacement ribbons and have been set into a gilt wood frame.
