Description
RICHARD VARICK
(1753 - 1831) Revolutionary War officer, aide to Benedict Arnold, appointed by Washington to be Secretary for Continental Army records. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Mar. 1, 1792, certifying that a Gerardus Hardenbrook has obtained a license to: "...keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong of spiritous Liquors..." in the city. The certificate also lays out certain restrictions: "... the Condition of this Recognizance is such, That if the said Gerardus Hardenbrook do not, during the Time that he shall keep an Inn or Tavern, keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern, or suffer or permit any Cock-fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table, or other Gaming-Table, or Shuffle-Board..." Signed boldly at the conclusion in black ink and docketed on the verso. Original folds with noticeable splitting, minor toning at the edges, else very good.
