Description
A Mississippian Seated Pottery FemaleÂ
c. 1000 - 1400 AD
This large example shows a seated woman on her haunches with exaggerated thighs and torso, legs tucked underneath, and feet exposed at rear. She looks upward with stern attention, the shoulder blades delineated along with thin arms, in relief, draping to the knees. Her hair is bundled into an opening for the vessel, which may have served as a seed jar. In a gray shell tempered pottery, such effigies are increasingly scarce to acquire.
