Description
Rare Civil War era bronze relief plaque depicting General George McClellan, mounted in a shadowbox, designed by F.O.C. Darley (1822-1888). Thin bronze plaque mounted of cream velvet, framed and glazed. Signed below the horse: ”F.O.C. Darley ~ fecit. ~ Patented Jun. 5th 1864 ~ J.Q.A. Ward Sculptor”. J.Q.A. Ward was the sculptor and foundry who translated Darley’s design into the bronze relief. The framed relief was distributed by John H. Williams of 353 Broadway, New York City starting in Sept. 1864. It is not known how many examples were made, but very few have survived and there are less than 10 known examples in collections, including one in the Print Room of the New York Public Library.
