Rare Snap Button Traveling Chess Set, 19th Century (Likely Jaques, London), with folding leather case and metal pieces. Case is 23 x 10 cm (folded) While most travel sets from the mid-19th century on are comprised of either peg pieces that fit into holes on the board or flat cardboard disks, this set is particularly rare in that the pieces are buttons that snap onto the board. Larger "stud" flat pieces resembling buttons do appear in the early 20th century, but again these fit into holes on the board.
