German-Made U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers' Sword Presented to Lt. W. H. Schwalbe, 12th Regiment New York National Guard, 1870. 30 ½-inch slightly curved, bright blade ornately etched on either side with floral designs and panoplies of arms. Obverse ricasso marked "W. HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA"; reverse ricasso the German sword making firm WKC logo. "IRON PROOF" on the back of the blade. Brass guard pierced with floral design. Leather covered grips with brass twisted wire wrap. Leather scabbard with brass mounts and drag. Upper guard engraved "Presented to / Lt. W. H. Schwalbe / by the members of Co. G / 12th Regt N. G. S. N.Y. / New York / Sept 15 / 1870."
Condition: Very good. The blade is bright and has only trivial scabbard wear. The hilt is tarnished. The scabbard leather is mottled from wear.
