Civil War German-Made U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers' Sword Presented to Lieutenant J. W. Shoemaker, Company F, Pennsylvania 33rd Infantry Regiment. 31 ¼-inch slightly curved blade marked "F. Horster / Solingen" on the obverse ricasso. Reverse of blade etched with floral scroll, panoply of arms, and "US"; obverse with floral decoration, panoply of arms, eagle and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ribbon. Fish skin grips with twisted brass wire wrap. Brass guard pierced with floral design. Black leather scabbard with brass mounts and drag. Upper mount engraved "Lieut. J. W. Shoemaker / Co. F "4" Reg't P.R.V.C. / 33rd Reg't P.V."
J. W. Shoemaker enlisted on June 11, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned into F Company of the Pennsylvania 33 Infantry Regiment. He received promotions to captain and major and mustered out on June 17, 1864 in Pennsylvania.
Condition: Very good. Blade relatively bright with some staining near the tip on either side from scabbard storage. Brass hilt with a dark patina. Scabbard with old paper wedged between the leather and brass drag. Leather with scuffs and shallow creases. Brass drag slightly bent and dented.
