Description
Clark Gable's WWII Overseas Hat, Second Lieutenant's Insignia, Service Hat Insignia and Army Air Corps Winged Star Shoulder Insignia. Sold with a one-page, 8 ½ x 11" typed letter dated June 3, 1975, signed by Gable's wife, Kay Gable in the original transmittal envelope. It reads, in full: "Dear Ken, / Enclosed is a few more of my Husbands [sic] military Items / A summer Hat, Gold Lt's Bars, shirt, patches, and Hat eagle / I hope you can used them in your collection, I will see what / else I can locate. / God Bless, / Kay Gable / Kay Gable". The lot comprises: 1.) Gable's summer weight khaki wool officer's overseas hat. Stamped on the leather sweatband "CAPT CLARK GABLE / 0-565390". A 2nd Lieutenant bar is pinned to the left side of the hat. 2.) Pair of matched 2nd Lieutenant's pin-back rank bars, each marked "AMICO / STERLING / 1/20 10K" on the reverse side. 3.) A pair of Army Air Force winged star shoulder insignia. 4.) Service dress hat eagle, marked "STERLING" on the reverse. No maker mark. Screw back.
Gable flew five combat missions with the 8th Air Force in WWII.
