Description
Texas CSA Captain W. J. Spurlock: Half-Plate Tintype. 4" x 5.375" tintype with hand-painted highlights depicting a Confederate officer identified as William Jackson Spurlock, housed in half of an embossed paper case (surface wear to case). He appears in a regulation uniform with cartridge box, holster, shoulder sash, kepi and dress sword sash. The sword he holds has a multi-branch guard and was possibly made by J. C. Wilson of Houston. The unusual belt has a rarely seen CS belt plate with oval tongue and wreath. The image is in overall fine condition with good clarity. Spurlock was a Texas native who was killed at the Battle of Foudouche Bayou in Pointe Coupee, Louisiana. It is likely this image was taken in his home state of Texas. Consigned by a direct descendant of Spurlock.
