19th Century J.R. Cooper's Patent Breech Loading No. 96 Rifle.Â
NSVN, 26 1/2-inch octagonal Damascus barrel with front and rear sight. Plum brown finish with a walnut checkered straight half-stock. The hinged action signed and engraved with foliage JR COOPER'S PATENT / BREECH LOADING / NO. 96. Lockplate marked JR COOPER. Steel triggerguard with foliate engraved finial and steel buttplate also with an engraved tang.
Note: According to Imperial War Museum, this mechanism was patented in 1835 by James Rock Cooper.
Condition: Very good to fine as refinished. Traces of pitting throughout barrel and steel furniture. A nice brown patina adorns the rifle. A nice example of a scarcely seen gun or mechanism. Traces of mold on metal and wood from storage, should clean. Action good. Bore ok, needs cleaning.
