John Gault Designed 1864 Radical Republican Ticket

Fremont-Cochrane Presidential Campaign Ferrotype Rarity
1864 Presidential Campaign, Rare “J.C. FREMONT-JOHN COCHRANE” with John Gault Designed Patriotic Frame Ferrotype, JF-1864-7. Choice Near Mint.
25mm. John Fremont, the famed “Pathfinder” represented the radical/liberal wing of the Republican Party which split with the Abraham Lincoln supporters in 1864. This historic 1864 Presidential Campaign Ferrotype is bright and sharp in detail with strong central Tintype Portraits of candidates John Fremont and running mate John Cochrane housed in a distinctively designed Gilt Brass frame. Designed with Heraldic Shields and Laurels, holed at the top for suspension as usual. The uniquely designed John Gault frame design is somewhat similar to the more plain brass frames used for Encased Postage Stamps and is collected in both fields. This Political design type is highly favored by both fields of collectors since a complete matched set is limited to the three 1864 Presidential Candidates including: Abraham Lincoln, George McClellan, and John C. Fremont. There is some typical irregularities and in the Tintype surface emulsion on both sides. The Fremont portrait appears quite nice and near perfect. An appealing, highly collectible example from this key 1864 Presidential election year. The lower reverse side rim portion reads, “Pat AUG. 12, 1862.” being Gault’s overall design Patent date in tiny letters. A very rare John Gault Designed Encased Postage Stamp related specimen.
